A simple formula that transformed my crappy life
Estimated read time: 1 mins 45 secs
Five years ago, I went into therapy. My self-esteem was at an all-time low. I just got diagnosed with ADHD, and I had serious social anxiety around other people.
Fast forward to today, my life is at least 10X better.
But this is not a story about my therapy sessions. This is a story about how you can transform your life just by getting a little better every week.
Albert Einstein loves compound interest.
When you try to get 1% better at something every week, you'll be 1.67 times better in a year.
Not very impressive, I know. But if you start looking at the results after year 3 and year 5, it's pretty significant.
After year 3, you'll be 4.72 times better than when you just started.
After year 5, you'll be 13.29 times better than when you just started.
And guess how much better can you get after year 10?
You’ll be 176.65 times more badass than when you just started!
For those of you that don't believe me, go learn the formula for compound interest from this article. It's incredibly powerful.
A quote that often attributes to Albert Einstein:
“Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it … he who doesn’t … pays it.”
Drastic changes in a short period usually don’t work.
I frequently see people try to make drastic improvements in their life in a short period, and many of them fail because that requires A LOT of motivation upfront.
5 years ago, I just unintentionally made small improvements to my mental health every week.
One week, I would force myself to go to a networking event I wasn't comfortable going to.
Another week, I would tell parents that I didn't like it when they did certain things using nonviolent communication even though I had a hard time voicing my opinions.
Small improvements require less motivation, and they pay off immensely in the long term.
If you are struggling to make progress in life, here's my recommendation:
Pick something you care about that you are willing to work on for at least 3 to 5 years.
Start taking small actions this week to get better at that thing.
Consistently try to get a little better at it every week, and you'll be amazed by your results after the third year.
This email was inspired by Neville Medhora's guest episode on Noah Kagan's podcast. In the episode, he talked about how he found it super helpful to grow his 6-figure business using the "1% better every week" concept.
